London Census on CD-ROM
Now you can browse the London Census records at your leisure in
the comfort of your own home, there is no need to go to a local
record office and sit in an airless room to trawl through reels
and reels of microfiche.
To give access to the census records to the general public, the
ideal solution was to transfer those records from micro-fiche and
microfilm to CD-ROM, which can be used in almost all modern-day
computers.
A UK-based family-run company, S&N Genealogy Supplies/British
Data Archive, is a pioneer in this field, and have successfully
transferred London the census from 1841 - 1901 to CD-ROM.
Easy to Use London Census CDs
The London Census images can be viewed using the free Adobe Acrobat
browser provided with the CDs. They are bookmarked by piece number
and the street or area indexes are also provided. This enables the
user to locate their particular area of interest and the sub-district
or piece number which covers that area. Once the images are on your
screen, you can zoom in and out (useful for small text), move the
image around, or even rotate the image 90 degrees (which can be
useful when printing).
S&N stands out from the competition because of the quality
of their products. Each census page has been scanned several times
to get the best possible results. If a page is missing or unreadable
on the original microfiche or microfilm, those images are obtained
and included on the CDs.
S&N census sets cover all English and Welsh counties, even
if some of those counties are not economically viable.
London Census Availability Online and on CD
The official records of birth, marriage and death and the census
records do not go back as far as parish records. Parish Records
started in 1538 when Thomas Cromwell (the Vicar General to King
Henry VIII) declared that all marriages, christenings and burials
should be recorded. For years before the census began, Parish Records
are a very useful resource. A wide range of London Parish Records
is available on CD and some are now online.
Also available on CD and online are London Directories, which can
also provide useful information.
To

In addition to this, S&N Genealogy Supplies has a great wealth
of genealogical data and books on CD, as well as software and storage,
thus making the company an invaluable resource to family historians.
